Wing Chun Competition rules                                                   

         The Purpose of the competition is to test the competitors on the following skills inherent to the

Wing Chun system. First and foremost, the safety to the competitors is paramount throughout this event.

 

1. Sensitivity and Reactive Skills

2. Proper and balanced Wing Chun Body Structure

3. Timing and Speed of movements

4. Wing Chun Stances and footwork

5. Control and awareness of distance and power issuance

6. Clear and precise strikes and trapping techniques

7. Clear and precise defense, the utilization of deflections and blocks

8. Control of the Centerline

9. Mind Intent and Relaxation

 

Chi Sao Competition Format

        This part of the competition will not be judged by point system, but rather by the competitors overall performance of the above skills.

 

1. Each match will consist of two, 1-minutes rounds.  There will be a 30-seconds rest period in between rounds.

    In the event of a tie, there will be a third round to determine the winner.

2. The competition area will be a square space, divided into two halves. (the size of the area will

    be determined at the time of the event.)

3. As proper kung fu etiquette, the competitors will bow to each other, the referee and the judges

    at the start of the match.

4. the competitors will meet at the center of the competition area, and will bridge by establishing forearm

    contact in stationary double chi sao (sticking hands) position.

5. Upon Command by the referee, the competitors will begin rolling. Only after three successive

    rotations can the competitors begin to initiate an exchange of techniques.

6. If the competitors disengage at any point, they must stop and return to the center of the competition

    area. And begin again with the required three successive roles is instructed be the referee.

7. If a competitors is driven out of the competition area, they must stop and return to the center of the

    competition area. And begin again with the required three successive rolls as instructed by the referee.

8. During the 1-munite break between rounds, the competitors must return to their respective corners

    and wait for the star of the next round.

 

Chi Sao Competition Rules

1. There must be a continuous exchange of discernable Wing Chun techniques, at the same time, the

    competitors must maintain adherence, or "Stick" with one another.

2. There is to be no exercise pushing or shoving with any part of the upper body (arms and shoulders.)

    A competitor can disrupt an opponent's balance by uprooting with proper Wing Chun structure.

3. Striking techniques with the fist, palm or foot should only be directed to the opponent's chest area.

4. Competitors must display good "bridging" ability. They must adhere to the opponent's forearms while

    attacking and defending. When separated, they must re-engage the "bridge".

5. Kicking is only allowed to the opponent's chest area, while at least one hand in contact with opponent.

6. The following are not permitted.

        1. Excessive force or any malicious action with the intent to cause damage to the opponent.

        2. Strikes with elbow, knee, or head.

        3. Punching, Kicking or chopping to the opponent's head or neck.

        4. Uncontrolled swinging punches.

        5. Repeatedly pushing and shoving an opponent out of the ring, causing a stoppage in the action.

        6. Kicking to the groin or any part of the leg.

        7. Holding on to opponent with both hands without executing a technique.

        8. There is no to be wrestling or grappling. Takedowns and joint locks are not allowed.

        9. Pulling or grappling any of the opponent's articles of clothes.

        10. Use of Foul language, gestures or verbal threat toward the opponent or another person.

        11. Verbal instructions (coaching) from instructors or fellow students throughout the match.

            Especially during the rest period.

7. Breaking of any of the above rules will result in the competitor receiving one warning.

     After a second warning id given, the competitor will be immediately disqualified.

8. Any strike that draws blood from an opponent will result in the immediate disqualification of the competitor.

9. A protest must be immediately presented tot he referee and Head Judge, not after the next round has started. Any protest given after is not valid.

 

 

Chi Sao Competition Officiating

1. The Judging committee will have the following.

            1. Head Judge

            2. Three/four Corner Judge

            3. Referee

            4. Timekeeper/Scorekeeper

  2. The head Judge will be arbitrate all disputes, whose decision will be final on all rulings not covered by the rules.

      The Head Judge is also responsible for the announcing for the winner of the match.

3. The Corner Judge will determine the winner, and will indicate an independent vote for the winner when a call is requested.

4. A competitor with majority votes will be declared the winner of the match.

5. In the event of a tie, due to an even of corner judges, the Head Judge will make the tie-breaking decision.

6. The Referee is responsible for starting and stopping the action, ensuring the rules are enforced and the safety of the competitors. The Referee can stop the clock during the match incase of an infraction of rules, an injury or a dispute.

7. The Timekeeper/Scorekeeper will star and stop the clock as per order of the Referee, and will verbally signal the end of the round. The Scorekeeper is responsible for recording the result of each match.

The Competitors will advance through a bracket system by process of elimination.

 

Competitor Categories

        The Competitors will be separated by weight for the Chi Sai Competition. They are as follows:

                    Light Weight - up to 150 lbs.

                    Middle weight - 150 to 175 lbs.

                    Heavy Weight - 175lbs. and above
